I've been making crocheted stress balls for my co-workers and have official dubbed them "Study Buddies." I've made about fifteen and still have several more requests to finish.
Only in recent years have I branched away from scarfs and hats and focused more on amigurmis and the like. It's a scary and exciting feeling when people ask you to do a commission for them.
Quite a few people have told me I should start selling my Study Buddies. I'm toying with the idea of opening an Etsy shop. However, one major concern I have is that I would miss people's reactions. I love seeing the smile that lights up a person's face when I give them a finished project. When I gave that blue Totoro to my friend at work, I thought she was going to cry. She keeps it at her desk and I am happy when I see it poking up above her cubicle wall. There's only a few feelings in the world that can compare to giving a gift.
Obviously I can't expect this kind of reaction every time I make something. But I think it's an element I would sure miss.
My plan is to release some pictures of the Study Buddies I have made to gage their reception to the DeviantART community. If they're popular, maybe I'll give the Etsy thing a try.
We'll see what you have to say.
